The Experience

The Treehouse Cove Lodge Experience

Some trips are about ticking boxes. A stay at Treehouse Cove Lodge is about the opposite, slowing down, stepping fully into Alaska, and letting the days unfold the way they want to. This is what it actually feels like to be here.

An Overview of the Experience

Treehouse Cove Lodge sits on a quiet stretch of Kachemak Bay, a few miles from the tiny village of Seldovia and a short boat ride from Homer. From the moment you arrive, the rhythm of normal life starts to fade. There is no traffic, no schedule pinging at you, and no other guests competing for attention. The lodge hosts only one party at a time, which means the property, the beach, the boat, and the hosts are all yours for the length of your stay.

The Treehouse Cove Lodge Experience at Treehouse Cove Lodge

The experience is fully guided and all-inclusive. Your meals are cooked for you, your fishing is captained by Scott, your accommodations are tucked into the trees, and the logistics that usually drain an Alaska trip are handled in the background. What you are left with is time, to fish, to watch the bay change colors, to talk over dinner, and to actually feel like you went somewhere.

If you are still weighing the trip, the honest "is it worth it" breakdown covers the value side. This page is the other half, what the days actually feel like.

A Typical Day at the Lodge

There is no rigid itinerary, but the shape of a day usually looks something like this.

Morning

You wake up in a treehouse. The light through the windows is soft and the only sounds are the bay and the trees. Coffee is on at the cookhouse before you get there. Breakfast is real food, eggs, sourdough, fresh fruit, sometimes leftover halibut from the night before, eaten slowly while you watch the water and figure out what kind of day it is going to be.

On the Water

By mid-morning, you are usually heading out on Captain Scott's custom-built 28-foot landing craft. Because the lodge sits halfway between Homer and the prime fishing grounds, you spend less time getting somewhere and more time with a line in the water. Halibut, salmon, rockfish, lingcod, the day's target depends on the season and the conditions. Between sets, the bay does its part: sea otters, eagles, the occasional whale, and mountains in every direction.

Meals

Lunch is usually casual, sandwiches on the boat or a quick stop ashore. Dinner is where the day pulls together. Janet and Scott are both serious cooks, and a typical meal might be your own catch grilled simply, with garden sides, fresh bread, and a dessert that makes everyone go quiet for a minute. You eat together at the cookhouse, with the bay framed in the windows.

Evenings

Evenings are slow on purpose. A walk on the beach, a long conversation around the fire, a quiet hour back in your treehouse. In summer, the light lingers for hours after dinner, and it is genuinely hard to make yourself go to bed.

The Setting: Kachemak Bay

Kachemak Bay is one of the most biologically rich places in Alaska, and Treehouse Cove sits inside it rather than at its edge. From the beach you look out across deep water at the Kenai Mountains. Glaciers are visible on a clear day. The shoreline is a mix of forest, beach, and quiet coves that you can paddle into without seeing anyone else.

Wildlife is part of daily life, not a scheduled event. Sea otters drift past the beach. Bald eagles fish from the trees above the cabins. Porpoises run alongside the boat. On longer outings, humpback whales, sea lions, and the occasional black bear on a far beach round things out. Nothing is staged. You are simply in the middle of a working ecosystem.

The Accommodations Experience

The treehouse is the part most guests remember first. It is hand-built in the living spruce, set up among the trees with views of the cove, and it manages the trick of feeling rustic and genuinely comfortable at the same time. Real beds, quality bedding, warm interiors, and big windows that put the bay in front of you from the moment you wake up.

A separate beach house and the new cookhouse dining cabin round out the property. The cookhouse adds a shower and a flush toilet for shared use, on top of the shower in the beach house and the composting toilets at each cabin. Because only one group is on the property at a time, none of these spaces feel busy, they just quietly add comfort.

The Social and Group Experience

The lodge is built for one group at a time, which changes the entire feel of the stay. There is no shared dining room with strangers, no waiting for a turn on the boat, no scheduling around other guests' plans. Whether you arrive as a couple, a family, or a group of friends, the property becomes yours.

Meals are the natural anchor of the day. You eat together, tell stories about what the boat saw, and plan tomorrow loosely. Scott and Janet are part of the experience without ever taking it over, they cook, guide, and tell stories when stories are wanted, and disappear when they are not. It feels less like staying at a lodge and more like visiting friends who happen to live in one of the most beautiful places in Alaska.

What Makes This Lodge Different

Most Alaska lodges fall into one of three buckets:

Treehouse Cove Lodge does not fit any of those. It is small, private, hand-built, and personally hosted. The fishing is genuinely good, but the experience is not only about fishing. The accommodations are unique, but they are not gimmicks. The hospitality is warm without being performative. Every piece of the stay is shaped by Scott and Janet, which is why no two stays feel exactly the same.
